What is SDF and how does it work?
Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a liquid we paint and floss directly onto a cavity to stop decay from spreading. It does not require numbing, a shot, or a drill, which makes it a great option for young or anxious patients. In 2016, the FDA gave SDF a "breakthrough therapy designation" to help speed up evaluation and research for treating severe childhood tooth decay.
Will my child still need a future treatment like a filling on an SDF treated tooth?
SDF stops decay from spreading, but it does not fill or fix the tooth structure, and it only stops the cavity at that moment in time. Without proper dental hygiene, the cavity can start growing again. It is important to note that due to the caries process, single applications stop active decay, but regular reapplications are necessary for long-term success.
For new/small cavities SDF is often all that is needed; larger ones may still need a filling or more involved treatment down the road, which we will discuss with you as needed.
Does SDF have any side effects?
SDF is safe and widely used in pediatric dentistry. The main side effect is that it turns the treated part of the tooth black, since it stops the decay in place. We will point out which teeth are treated so there are no surprises, and we try to advise other treatment options on socially visible front teeth.
